15. News - Shocking tsunami of Japan


The earthquake and tsunami in Japan on March 11th 2011 popularly known as "Eastern Japan Great Earthquake disaster" was a 9.0 magnitude undersea mega thrust earthquake off the coast of Japan which occurred at 14 : 46 Japan Standard Time.


The original point of origin of the earthquake which is called the epicenter was approximately 72 kms east of the Oshika Peninsula of tohoku. The Oshika Peninsula is a peninsula that projects southeast into the Pacific Ocean from the coast of Miyagi Prefecture in northeast Honshu, the main island of Japan. Tohoku region of Japan is also known as Michinoku.

The earthquake triggered tsunami waves of up to 37.9 meters that struck Japan within minutes after the quake.


This earthquake is one of the five most powerful earthquakes in the world overall since modern record keeping began in 1900. After World War II this is the toughest and the most difficult crisis for Japan.

The quake moved Honshu, the largest island of Japan, 2.4 meter east and shifted the Earth on its axis by almost 10 cm.


Around 15,000 deaths, 5000 injuries and 15000 people missing has been reported. Also 125,000 buildings damaged or destroyed. It caused heavy damage to whole communication system of Japan and a dam collapsed.

In respect to atomic disaster this earthquake and tsunami created the most complex situation as all reactors at the Fukushima nuclear Power Plant are involved. However, it was the second largest nuclear accident after the Chernobyl disaster.


Huge thanks to people of all the countries who have offered their helping hand to this crisis. Around 116 Countries and 28 international organizations have provided assistance to Japan to fight with the unfortunate situation.
