March 10

Politics – Akhilesh Yadav was chosen for being the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Akhilesh had impressed the voters with his free Laptop offer along with other bids. ‘Youth icon’ Akhilesh had managed to grab 224 out of 403 assembly seats with his able leadership in Uttar Pradesh.

International- Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani appointed Lt Gen Zaheerul Islam as the new Director General of ISI (Inter Services Intelligence).

Science - Astro-scientists discovered the most distant galaxy cluster located at 10.5 billion light years away from Earth’s Milky Way at the COSMOS field of the sky. These are the ‘urban centres’ of the Universe.

Odisha – CBI filed charge sheet of the infamous ‘Pipili Gangrape’ in the court of JFMC, Pipili ruling out any "rape" or "gangrape" and reported it to be an attempt to murder case. Earlier Pipili MLA Pradeep Maharathy had to resign as Agriculture Minister after it was alleged that the main accused took shelter in his farm house.

Arts - French comics artist Jean Giraud, also known as Moebius, the creator of Blueberry and a range of influential science-fiction comics, dies at age 73.

Bizarre - Hundreds of nude cyclists took to the streets of Peru's capital, Lima, to call attention to safety conditions on the city's roads. Thousands have been killed on the roads because of reckless driving. Many of the cyclists painted slogans and signs on their bare skin.


March 11

National - Sri Lankan Naval personnel resorted to "unwarranted" attacks on Indian fishermen injuring 16 people from Tamil Nadu. They attacked with wooden logs, stones and bottles and damaged the boat and fishing net of the fishermen.

International - UN and Arab League envoy Kofi Annan held a second meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in an effort to start a national dialogue in the country.

Politics - Commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma today announced the decision to lift the ban on cotton overseas sales. The government had banned the cotton exports on March 5 fearing less availability of the material in the country.

International - A US soldier killed 16 people including nine children and three women in Kandahar province's Panjwayi district in Afghanistan.  US President Barack Obama promised a probe into the incident.

March 12

Sri Lanka - Sri Lanka's Defence Ministry ordered news channels to get prior approval before sending mobile phone alerts about the military or police.

National - The budget session 2012-13 began in the parliament.

Nature - A strong earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit Jammu & Kashmir at around 11:36 AM. No casualty or severe damage was reported.

Media - CNN is likely to buy social media news site Mashable for more than $200 million. Mashable covers a wide range of news related to the fast-evolving social media and Internet sector.

International – More than 100 people are killed in ethnic clashes and cattle raids in South Sudan. However, Jonglei state governor Kuol Manyang said at least 223 people had been confirmed dead.

March 13

Crime - a huge uproar was witnessed over the video showing the brutal killing of slain LTTE chief Prabhakaran's 12-year-old son.  The victim, Balachandran's body was shown stripped to the waist with five bullet holes in the chest. Five of Prabhakaran’s bodyguards were also seen lying near him in similar positions.

Politics – Congress party senior MP Harish Rawat resigned from the Union Cabinet when he was denied the post of Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. 

Religion - Bombay High Court ordered the dismissal of the Shirdi Saibaba Sansthan Trust that
governs world famous Sai Baba temple in Shirdi in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. The trust came under scanner after allegations of misappropriation of funds by some trust members hit headlines.

Odisha - BJD won in 28 out of 30 districts in the Zilla Parishad elections. Congress could win only in Jharsuguda and Kandhamal. BJP and others achieved nil.

Health - World Health Organization (WHO) said in a report that mental illness is a major risk factor for suicide. The report that (on average) one person dies in every 40 seconds globally.

International – A ferry, carrying about 200 passengers, sank after colliding with an oil barge in the Meghna River, 40 kms away from Dhaka in Bangladesh killing at least 138 people. The accident is described as the country's worst ferry mishap in the past seven years.

March 14

Entertainment - Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan’s little baby, who was called as ‘Beti B’, was named as ‘Aaradhya'. She had born on 16th November 11.

International - Google paid tribute to Japanese grand master of ‘origami’ (Art of creating paper models) Akira Yoshizawa on his 101st birthday today on its homepage through Google Doodle.

Politics - Samajwadi Party supporters reportedly attacked Dalit families in Dadri area in U.P.

Odisha- Pandemonium was marked in Odisha Assembly.  Opposition Congress MLAs tussled with the security staff at the Speaker's podium after creating a disruption during question hour.

Technology - The oldest English-language Encyclopaedia Britannica which was still in print is moving solely into the digital age. It was first published in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1768.

Politics - The President of the United States Barack Obama and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom David Cameron meet at the White House in Washington D.C. to discuss Afghanistan, Syria, the global economy and Iran.

March 15

Cricket - Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in Mirpur in the Asia Cup. Aizaz Cheema was declared 'Man of the Match'.

Crime - 'Baby Falak' (two-year-old) died of cardiac arrest at the AIIMS in New Delhi. She was abandoned and abused by a teenage girl, who was forced into prostitution and later given charge of the baby.

Science - "Mystery human fossils" including Skulls, jawbones and teeth that belong to a species which is claimed to be an entirely new species of Homo sapiens was found to be about 11,500 years old. The scientists have named these people as ‘the Red Deer Cave’ people.

Odisha - Scientists from the Tokyo University, Japan visited Chilika lagoon to make research on the conservation of dolphins.

Entertainment – Around Cable TV operators in Madhya Pradesh jointly decided to stop beaming of any entertainment channels from March 14, protesting against the state government decision to levy entertainment tax on them.


March 16

Politics - Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee presented the Union Budget 2012-13 in Lok Sabha today. The budget speech began at 11 AM.  This was Pranab Mukherjee’s 7th budget speech.

Science - study found that people who appear to be constantly distracted have more “working memory”, giving them the ability to hold a lot of information in their heads and manipulate it mentally.

Cricket - Sachin Tendulkar hit the 100th international hundred, when he hit his 49th ODI hundred against Bangladesh in Mirpur, He became the first cricketer to score 100 international hundreds and also the first player to score centuries against all Test playing countries in all formats through this century.

International - Google Inc, the world's largest Web-search provider, is likely to hire Kevin Rose, the founder of Digg Inc.

Politics – Actor cum activist of Sudan George Clooney was arrested for civil disobedience during a demonstration outside Sudan's embassy in Washington DC.  The actor was taking part in a protest to warn of a humanitarian crisis in the volatile border area between Sudan and South Sudan.

March 17

International - Two explosions rocked the Syrian capital Damascus killing several policemen and civilians. The blasts have been described as "terror attacks".

Politics - Pakistani Judicial Commission began recording the statements of three key Indian witnesses in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

Odisha - Odisha government suspended seven erring doctors for posing as employees of a private medical college in the state capital, to save the institute's recognition with Medical Council of India (MCI).

Entertainment – Ekta Kapoor's ‘Bade Achhe Lagte Hain’ was criticized for the hot scene by Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar, the serial’s lead characters in the last episode. The serial is a family story but in this episode it was too hard for the family audience to digest the hot romance.

Controversy - Controversial writer Salman Rushdie described his Jaipur Literature Festival prevention episode a political gimmick and blamed Congress and Rahul Gandhi for creating it. Rushdie attended the India Today Conclave 2012 in New Delhi today without any protest.

Politics - Congress MP Sajjan Singh Verma from Madhya Pradesh's Dewas served a privilege notice toTeam Anna member Arvind Kejriwal for calling MPs "rapists, murderers and looters" during an election campaign rally in February.

Science - Researchers from the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Science and Technology (SKUAST) created ‘Noorie’, a clone of the Pashmina, a rare Himalayan goat after three years of tough study and research.

March 18

Politics - Union Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi resigned from his post. Trivedi had earned Mamata's wrath after he defied her and went for the fare hike in the budget 2012.

Odisha - Maoists abducted two Italian tourists in Odisha's Kandhamal district and listed 13 demands to release them. Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda was suspected to be behind the abduction.

Sports - McLaren's Jenson Button won the Australian Grand Prix for the third time ahead of world champion Sebastian Vettel. Button's fellow Briton and team mate Lewis Hamilton, who started on pole, finished third.

Football - Iranian football icon Ali Daei has been rushed to hospital following a serious car accident. The 42-year-old former Iran international, who is currently managing Pro League club Rah Ahan, had suffered a severe head injury.

International - Villagers found 14 bullet-ridden bodies scattered around the Bara area of the northwestern Khyber tribal region near the Afghanistan border, as Pakistani security forces step up military offensives against militants.

March 19

International - The Constitutional Court of Portugal rejected underworld don Abu Salem's plea to cancel his extradition to India staying the order of the Supreme Court of Portugal. Salem is a key accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

Technology – Today Delhi High Court repealed a case against software giant Microsoft India, which was accused of hosting objectionable content on its web pages.

Gadgets – Today Samsung Electronics launched the smart television for the Indian market. The interactive television can be turned on and off or activated to select applications without touching the remote using the voice commands.

Sports - England under-21 footballer Fabrice Muamba remains in a critical condition in intensive care after suffering a cardiac arrest. The player’s fiancee urged fans to pray for him, while the club’s manager Owen Coyle said he hoped there would be a “happy outcome” for Muamba.

Syria - Intense fighting took place between Syrian rebels and government forces at Damascus in Syria.  The clashes were the fiercest so far in the Syrian capital since the start of the Syrian uprising last year.

March 20

National - 15 people were killed and four others were injured when a passenger train rammed into a vehicle at an unmanned railway crossing in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh at 7.30 in the morning.

Politics - TMC MP Mukul Roy sworn-in as the new Railway Minister. Roy's name was recommended by Mamata after Trivedi dared to give proposal for passenger fares hike without consulting her.

Crime – A sessions court in Pune granted death sentence to two persons convicted in the gang rape and murder of a 26-year-old BPO employee in 2007.

Gadget – Today Dell launched its latest XPS 13 Ultrabook in Mumbai for India. The device is available with a starting price of Rs 79,900.

Health - the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital of Chennai underwent the 1,000th kidney transplant with the patient 23-year-old Shanmugam. This was a record achievement for a government run hospital.

International - World Sparrow Day was observed today to celebrate the beauty of the house sparrow. The house sparrow is now a disappearing species.

March 21

International - US Republican Presidential nomination hopeful Mitt Romney won the Illinois Primary defeating his main rival Rick Santorum.Romney won 47 per cent of the total votes polled.

Gadget - Nokia launched its latest Smartphone Asha 303 in India. The device is available at Rs 8,899.

Odisha - the Matric (Class X) examinations was postponed for 20 days after the question papers were stolen in Kakatpur area. Some miscreants had stolen the question papers on seven subjects by breaking open the iron chests there.

Science - Scientists developed a robotic jellyfish in the US which uses the sea water energy power. The "Robojelly" imitates the action of the jellyfish, which uses a circular muscle to open out its bell-like body and then sharply close it, expelling water to move.

Entertainment - Legendary Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee was selected for India's highest film honour - the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2012. The award is given by the Central government for lifetime achievement in Indian cinema.

Odisha - Senior BJD leader Ranendra Pratap Swain alias Raja Swain won the Athagarh Assembly by polls defeating his contestant the Congress candidate Suresh Mohapatra by 47,390 votes.

March 22

Cricket - Pakistan won the Micromax Asia Cup 2012 in the final match in Dhaka beating Bangladesh with just 2 runs. Shahid Afridi was declared 'Man of the Match' and Shakib Al Hasan was declared 'Player of the Tournament'.

National - The Comptroller Auditor General (CAG) in its report hinted that the government has lost Rs 10.67 lakh crore by not auctioning coal blocks between 2004 and 2009. BJP termed the loss as the biggest scam in the country even higher than the 2G spectrum allocation scam.

Politics - Union Railway Minister Mukul Roy announced rollback in rail fare hike for sleeper, AC chair car and AC 3-tier. First class AC and AC tier 2 got no rollback.

International - UNHRC adopted resolution against Sri Lanka on alleged war crimes of 26-year conflict with the Tamil Tigers. India also voted in favor of the US-backed resolution.

Crime- A woman, Rebecca Helen Elder, 39, appeared in the Adelaide's District Court in Australia on charges of raping a man. The Daily Mail reported that she is accused of breaking into man's house and molested him.

Odisha - Maoists killed a Sub-Inspector of Police, Mr. Krishna Chandra Rath, aged 57 years and posted at Mudulipada police station, in the Khairput market.

March 23

National - MDMK Chief Vaiko and over 500 other activists from MDMK, PMK, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Nam Tamizhar Iyakkam were arrested while they were protesting against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, an Indo-Russian project.

International – Setting a precedent, an US woman, Rebecca Morlock could manage to adopt Kyle, a young boy from Kalimpong of West Bengal. Convincing the Supreme Court, a Delhi districts court, the US embassy and a US district court and finally through a video conference she won to take the guardianship.

Entertainment - Sriram Raghavan directed, Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor starrer suspense thriller (spy story)'Agent Vinod' was released today. The film received mixed to negative reviews from critics.

Gadget - Demand for BlackBerry devices collapsed in its home Canada. Around 2 million BlackBerry devices have been shipped in Canada in 2011 as compared to 2.85 million Apple’s iPhones.

Religion - Save Ganga activist GD Aggarwal alias Gyan Swarup Sanand, a former IIT professor ended his 15 days fast against the construction of dams on the River Ganga after Union Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal assured him that the issue will be taken up by the government.

Odisha - Maoists abducted ruling BJD MLA of Laxmipur constituency Mr. from Toyaput on Koraput-Laxmipur route.  Around 80-100 Maoists stopped the MLA’s vehicle at around 11 PM today, surrounded him and took him away to the jungle.

March 24

National - government hiked the dearness allowance (DA) by 7 per cent for The central government employees and pensioners. It will be applicable from January 1, 2012. Around 80 lakh people will be benefited by the increased DA.

Politics – Bill passed by the Union Cabinet for granting wife a share in her husband's property. As per this new amendment, a wife can oppose the husband's plea for divorce under the new "irretrievable breakdown of marriage" clause, but the husband can not oppose wife's divorce plea.

International - Minister Mervyn Silva of Sri Lanka threatened to "break the bones" of three rights activists who campaigned for a US resolution at Geneva that was deemed to be anti-Colombo.

Nature - Australia was hit by a 6.1-magnitude earthquake which is its biggest in 15 years, being its epicenter near Ernabella, in the middle of Australia, at a shallow depth of three kilometers.

Gadget - IT products manufacturer Wishtel launched tablet which for the first time feature support for native Indian languages along with other apps.The 'IRA' and 'IRA Thing' offered by Wishtel are now available at prices between Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,500.


Social Media - Facebook threatened the employers to take legal action for seeking Facebook log-in passwords of their employees or job applicants. Facebook's Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan said that accessing private information through someone else's profile is the violation of law.

March 25

Politics - Anna Hazare observed a day-long fast at Jantar Mantar demanding protection for the whistleblowers and pressing for a strong Lokpal Bill. Not less than 10 to 20 thousand people offered their support by being physically present in the venue.

Sports - Fernando Alonso of Ferrari won the F1 Malaysian Grand Prix title.  Sauber's Sergio Perez finished second. Lewis Hamilton of McLaren finished third ahead of Red Bull's Mark Webber and Lotus' Kimi Raikkonen. The race was too difficult to win as it was marred by rain. 

Odisha - Three top journalists of Odisha walked for 18 hours to reach the Maoist camp in a dense forest in Kandhamal-Ganjam border to negotiate for the release of the Italian hosts. Top Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda alias Sunil, who seems to be responsible for the abduction, talked peace and said he does not prefer violence. Claudio Colangelo, one of the abducted Italian tourists was released.

Cricket – Putting full stop to the speculation of his retirement from cricket Sachin Tendulkar confirmed at a media conference that he does not have any plan now to retire from cricket. "If I retire at the top of my career, I will be doing injustice to the country," he said.

Auto - Maruti Suzuki India hiked the prices of its cars following the excise duty increase in Union Budget 2012-13. So, as per the new price tag Maruti Alto will cost Rs 4,200 to Rs 5,900 more, Wagon R will cost Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,600 more and Maruti Swift will cost Rs 7,700 to Rs 11,900 more.

International - Russian President Dmitri Medvedev offered full support for envoy Kofi Annan's peace mission in Syria, saying it may be the last chance to avoid a "prolonged and bloody civil war".

4G service started in India


Bharti Airtel, one of the major telecom companies of India has become the first company in the country to offer 4G, the high-speed Internet services using fourth-generation telecommunications technology.

The 4G technology allows surfing the Internet, video conference and downloading music, video and other content at a considerably faster rate compared to the presently available 3G in the country. 

The company hopes that introduction of this high-speed wireless broadband (4G) would transform India and build the country's digital economy. Bharti Airtel chairman Sunil Mittal described the launch event to be a milestone for India and Airtel.

Airtel has planned to begin the 4G wireless broadband services from Kolkata and then the same will be extended to other locations in the country.

It should be recalled that the country had witnessed one of the largest instances of corruption in distribution of the 2G licenses to favor some companies years back. It was a scam of $39 billion and a former telecom minister is in custody along with his associates with this 2G scam allegation.
