4G service started in India

Bharti Airtel, one of the major telecom companies of India has become the first company in the country to offer 4G, the high-speed Internet services using fourth-generation telecommunications technology.

The 4G technology allows surfing the Internet, video conference and downloading music, video and other content at a considerably faster rate compared to the presently available 3G in the country.

The company hopes that introduction of this high-speed wireless broadband (4G) would transform India and build the country's digital economy. Bharti Airtel chairman Sunil Mittal described the launch event to be a milestone for India and Airtel.

Airtel has planned to begin the 4G wireless broadband services from Kolkata and then the same will be extended to other locations in the country.

It should be recalled that the country had witnessed one of the largest instances of corruption in distribution of the 2G licenses to favor some companies years back. It was a scam of $39 billion and a former telecom minister is in custody along with his associates with this 2G scam allegation.
