555 Odissi dancers perform together in Odisha
For the first time
in the history of Odishi dance, a piece of choreography of Odishi was performed
by 555 performers together on a single platform at the Kalinga Stadium in
Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India on 23rd December 2011.
Selected Odishi dancers from India and abroad performed this remarkable dance on the first day of the 8-day grand international festival of dance, organized by the Tourism and Culture department of Odisha in association with Odishi Research Centre (ORC) and US-based Indian performing Arts Promotion (IPAP).
Performance of such a huge number of dancers together, mesmerized the audience. To the astonishment, although the dance was presented by such a large number of dancers in concert, still it was a systematic one and without a miss from any of them which made spellbound a huge audience present in the venue.
The distinguished gathering included Odisha's Tourism and Culture minister Prafulla Samal and Bhubaneswar MP Prasanna Patsani.
The said
performance was an attempt to set a world record in Odishi. Fortunately
representatives of the Guinness World Records were also present to witness and
umpire various aspects of the performance and see whether the guidelines laid
down for the event fits to their requirement.
We congratulate all
the dancers and organizers to present such a historical event and wish them all
the best.

Parliament uproars over Bhagvad Gita facing ban in Russia
Members of Parliament from all the parties have strongly supported the protest against the move of a Siberian Court to ban the prime Hindu holy text Bhagwat Gita in Russia. They have demanded that the government to take it up strongly with Russia.
Bhagavad Gita, the esteemed holy book |
The said Court in Tomsk has mentioned in its verdict that the Russian translation of a book 'Bhagwad Gita As It is' written by Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) was apparently spreading "social discord". The Court further urged that the text possesses extremist views.
Today, MP from Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Bhartruhari Mahtab raised the issue in the house and asked the government to intervene immediately to ensure the religious freedom of Hindus in Russia. "I want to know from the government what it is doing. The religious rights of Hindus in Russia should be protected. The government should impress upon the Russian authorities through diplomatic channels," Mahtab urged.
Indians in Moscow, numbering about 15,000, and followers of the ISKCON religious movement in Russia have appealed to the Indian government to intervene diplomatically to resolve the issue in favor of the scripture.
Loksabha plunged into chaos, with MPs urging Speaker Meira Kumar to let them speak on the matter. She, however, refused and instead asked them to send notes and associate with Mahtab and adjourned the house till 2 P.M.
"We will not tolerate any move to insult Lord Krishna," shouted Lalu Prasad Yadav. Members of Shiv Sena, BJP, RJD, BSP, Samajwadi Party and even Congress member Ijyaraj Singh stood up and protested the move soughing to an immediate intervention by the government in this matter.
It is most unfortunate that the Russian Court brands the best epic of Hindus to be ‘extreme’ when people across the world have acclaimed the same.

Spirituality : Draupadi was pure despite Polyandry
It has always been a debate how Draupadi could be assumed chaste even after having five husbands. She is also revered as one of the ‘great five virgins’ (pancha satee) of mythology by uttering whose names all sins gets excused by its virtuous influence. The reasons are described herewith.
1) As per Narada and Vayu Puranas, Draupadi was composite Avatar of Goddesses Shyamala (wife of Dharma), Bharati (Wife of Vayu), Sachi (wife of Indra), and Usha (wife of Ashwinis) and hence married their earthly counterparts in the form of the five Pandavas and so there is nothing to question her chastity.
2) Draupadi was also avatar of Goddess Shree or Wealth who was joint wife to five Indras, the Five Pandavas. She was to be born several times for imprisoning the Indras. First time was as Vedavati who cursed Ravana (who is another goddess Avatar Swaha, wife to Agni). She then came again as Maya-Sita especially to take revenge from Ravana while Agni hid the real Sita. Third one was partial either Damyanti (whose husband Nala was equivalent to Dharma, Vayu, Indra just like the Pandavas) and her daughter Nalayani. She married Sage Mudgala. The fifth avatar was Draupadi herself. So we find in Draupadi, a composite avatar of Kali, Parvati, Sachi, Shyamala, Usha, Bharati, Shree, Swaha, the eight goddesses.

Hence, Draupadi could be taken to be granted as an icon of chastity even though practicing polyandry.

Indian Press in Peril : The Times Now/ Justice Sawant Case
It will not be wrong to say that Indian Press is in peril looking into the Times Now news channel and Justice PB Sawant conflict recently.
Former Justice of the Supreme Court of India initiates a defamation case u/s 500 of the Indian Penal Code against the Times Now channel alleging the later of showing a photograph of him (wrongly) in place of P K Samantha, a serving judge of the Kolkata high court, alleged to be involved in the Ghaziabad district court provident fund scam in 2008.
The news channel admitting the incidence, begs apologizes to the esteemed justice personally and also in its broadcast scrolling for following five days. They respectfully vow that it was a technical mistake which was neither intentional nor a libel. It was inadvertently and unintentionally happened for which they sincerely apologize. The photograph was also shown for merely 15 seconds.
But still not satisfied with the apology, the victim went to the court in Pune and moved a defamation case. Shockingly, the Honorable Court punished the accused party ordering it to pay a fine of 100 crore rupees.
Accordingly, the news channel moved to the Bombay High Court for an appeal challenging the decision in September 2011. But the High Court also rejected the appeal and maintained the lower Court order.
Times News Group further moved to the apex court of India, the Supreme Court, to order a stay in the above matter, but the Supreme Court bench presided over by Justice G. S. Singhvi of the Honorable Supreme Court rejected the appeal and upholds the interim order last Monday.
Reacting to the ruling, The Editors Guild of India, Foundation for Media Professionals, Broadcast Editors Association (BEA) and many more apex press associations of India has expressed concern against the order.
“It is true that the allegation has been proved (and for which the concerned channel has sincerely begged apology). But is it justified to award a fine of such a huge amount of 100 crore rupees as the damage for defamation? Moreover, each day the world is witnessing different type of violation of rules, regulations and law and commitment of crimes in India in different media. In those case why the Court is not awarding such exemplary punishment? Kasab has been arrested red handed, killing more than 100 people including citizens of 27 foreign countries. How the Court is silent in his matter even after such a long time? The present case shows – because the victim this time was a member of the same community who have awarded this punishment.” Like this many questions were discussed in a meeting held by the press reporters in Bhubaneshwar on last Thursday.
The order in this case is a matter of concern for the media persons in India. It has limited the fundamental right to freedom of speech as provided in article 19 of the Constitution.
